Artist Statement

As an engineer I looked at things and saw how they look like, what their purpose is and how they function. As an artist I had to go way beyond that. I now look at things how they make me feel, what emotions they will generate in me, and how I can put them on canvas so the viewer will feel those emotions, too. To do that I have to omit details, which distract and add things, which will enhance the desired effect on the viewer. That is especially important in abstract paintings, which makes painting abstract much more difficult. My work reflects the experiences and impressions gathered in my lifetime. The subjects of my paintings are selected in carefully reviewing available pictures and memories and letting them simmer in me for a while until I know how the painting has to look like. Only then do I put paint on the canvas and only if I achieve what I set out to do will I sign my paintings.
